In the 18th century, all stately homes had perfume fountains. The height of luxury, enjoyed by only the most affluent, these fountains adorned and perfumed the finest interiors and replenished crystal bottles handmade by the finest craftsmen. At this time when perfume wasn’t part of an industry, perfume-making was perfectly hand-crafted and sustainable. MUGLER INVENTS THE VERY FIRST REFILLABLE PERFUME EXPERIENCE WITH THE SOURCE IN 1992.


By wanting to make a luxury accessible to anyone, MUGLER invented the first sustainable and refillable perfume. With the launch of its gourmand fragrance Angel in 1992, the visionary creator Thierry MUGLER knew that the semi-hand-crafted star bottle—designed with the help of the Brosse Master Glassmakers—was too precious to be replaced like many products with a linear life cycle. He deeply wished to offer his loyal clientele the opportunity of keeping the bottle as long as possible, thanks to the MUGLER Source: an economic and ecological way to endlessly refill the bottle with your favorite MUGLER fragrance.

IN 2019, THE REBIRTH OF THE FOUNTAIN, EVEN MORE SUSTAINABLE.


In 2019, the Source is reinventing itself as part of an eco-design strategy to heighten innovation and accountability in luxury and becomes the MUGLER Fountain, thus going even further in offering the best sustainable perfume experience. The new design of the MUGLER fountain has been imagined in collaboration with EVEA, an independent consulting agency specializing in eco-design in products and services. Lighter, smaller, new recyclable glass cartridges will contain 25% recycled material, as well as bottles with an automatic fill-stop mechanism. All the parts can be removed and thereby replaced, which puts the emphasis on durability, conservation, and reuse rather than manufacturing a whole new fountain. The fragrance cartridges are made from 25% recycled glass, thus reducing its average environmental impact by 21% and climate change impact by 21%*. In addition to allowing beauty advisors to clearly see the amount of fragrance in the bottle, these new glass cartridges are 100% recyclable**.



Today, one MUGLER bottle is refilled every 25 seconds. With ambition to become the best sustainable perfume brand in mind, MUGLER wants to engage its consumers in a virtuous circle around its vision for a more responsible luxury, based on its perfume know how, the MUGLER fountain, and sustainably sourced high-quality ingredients among many other brand initiatives.
